From 1 July 2015, responsibility for providing health services to residents of the Chatham Islands transfers from Hawkes Bay DHB to Canterbury DHB. It will be a significant change for this small community of around 600 people.
Canterbury DHB anticipates a number of clinical challenges mostly associated with the geographic isolation of the Chathams. The DHB will focus on providing the right mix of locally-based care and appropriate access to specialists based on the mainland.
